Drainage for the future The largest single


investment ever in Barnsley education the £1.1 billion Building Schools for the Future programme continues to make excellent progress with a programme of construction of nine new Adult Learning Centres (ALC’s) and two Special Schools. Two of these builds


currently underway are; Dearne ALC and Carlton ALC and Cleveland-Land-Services (CLS) is responsible for the final grading and drainage schemes as well as the installation of an STP. Following the completion of the STP, CLS will then carry out remedial works on the existing pitches including installing new long jump pits, artificial cricket wicket, hammer and shot circles. The pitches will have minor grading works, sand topdressing, overseeding and verti-draining programmes. The combined area of both


the new schools covers 7 hectares and CLS has already completed the grading works using a CAT D5 with full laser control followed by top soiling at Dearne ALC, cultivation and final grading works, with sand applied for amelioration. Before seeding, 570metres of collector and cut off drains had to be installed at Dearne and 860metres at Carlton followed by respective totals of 7300m and 22600m of piped sand slits. That is why we used the CAT D5 for the grading works and the AFT Wizz Wheel 75 trencher for the installation of intensive turf drainage systems” The AFT Wizz Wheel 75 is a


powerful and rugged wheel trencher for tractors from 90 to 160hp (60-105kW) has been re- designed to be pulled centrally behind the tractor and provides the very high speed trenching, up to 2000metres per hour with digging widths from 50 to 150mm (2” to 6”).


A wide


conveyor belt ensures smooth waste removal which then folds back to a height of less than 3metres for easy transportation. AFT Wizzwheel 75’s have standard pocket held reversible soil blades to greatly increase the blade working life or an optional rock wheel with bullet teeth only to tackle the toughest ground conditions.

appearance of its course, Faversham Golf Club in Kent has turned to ACO GroundGuard to repair key areas of its grassed playing surface that had been subjected to extreme wear. The award winning modular grid system has been used to promote natural grass growth, stabilise the soil condition and improve surface water drainage in locations where standing water combined with high levels of foot and trolley traffic had badly damaged the existing surface. ACO GroundGuard is manufactured from recycled polymer in lightweight slabs 4cm deep, 60cm long and 40cm wide. No special tools, expertise or


extensive ground preparations are required to install the system; individual slabs are simply clipped together and outer edges cut or trimmed to any shape for the perfect finish. Capable of supporting 250 tonnes per square metre, it is specifically designed to create access routes, car parks and pedestrian pathways.The open structure allows water to quickly penetrate through the grid to the underlying top soil.


This


eliminates the expense of having to install a supplementary drainage system, reduces the risk of flooding and is more environmentally sustainable.
