£6 million funding for after school sports clubs gets green light
The government has announced £6m funding for 3,000 after-school sports clubs in the UK for spring next year. The aim of the clubs will be to involve all school-age children in sports regardless of their athletic ability. With more than half of five to 16-year-olds now taking part in three hours of sport a week, the after- school clubs are intended to help fulfil the ambition of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) to offer children opportunities to take part in five hours' of good-quality sporting activity every week, both in and out of school, by 2013.
Decline in child fitness threat to
future health
Medical Officer 2009 Sir Liam Donaldson warns that child fitness is declining by 9 per cent a decade and carries a greater threat to the health of future generations than growing obesity. Sir Liam calls for a national programme of fitness testing to be piloted in secondary schools to help reverse the trend of inactivity.
Spitfire lands again at Hornchurch Country Park!
Hornchurch Country Park has gone back in time to the Second World War with an exciting new project unveiled in the children’s play area! Over the last few weeks a half- size Spitfire climbing rock has been taking shape for budding young flying aces to clamber on. The Spitfire is the
focal point of a larger, new and exciting play scheme installed by Wicksteed Playscapes and London Borough of Havering council with funding from Playbuilder, Lottery and London Marathon Trust. Wicksteed will also be installing a range of challenging play equipment
for both younger and older children which will include a slide, Hurricane swing, Pendulum swing, Revolva roundabout, G-force and Black Beards Ladder to mimic a control tower!
shaped wooden seating further reflects the area’s history.

The full-size polystyrene form was transported and positioned on site. It was then reinforced with a steel mesh before being sprayed on-site with colour-impregnated concrete to a depth of 150mm. Hand carved foot and hand holds were then added during this
process.Don Stewart, Park Project Manager, London Borough of Havering commented, “Havering Council and local children are really excited about the recently constructed natural children's play area. The design of the play area complements the heritage of the facility perfectly, particularly the bespoke spitfire climbing feature. The design which includes sand, gravel paths, fallen tree logs and other natural materials works well in the rural landscape, and the play equipment chosen is proving really exciting for children from across the
borough. The new facility has given the park a fantastic lift.”

The Caloo Workout Bundle 8 focuses on a cardio workout rather then a strength based workout and was recently installed at Hawtonville Young People’s Centre, Nottinghamshire. The Centre Manager had
this to say: “From the outset we found Caloo to be very professional and forthcoming with advice and expertise and we had no problems with the ordering and administration of the installation. Everything happened on time and the equipment was installed correctly and with minimum
disruption. The equipment has now been installed for five weeks and is used by all ages from 7 to 70+ (I saw an older woman, 70+, nip on whilst walking her dog). Young people were on it as soon as installed and the equipment has been very well used by all the centre users, so much so I’ve invited other local authority officers to have a look with a view to installing on other parks”
