SHELTERS & COVERED WALKWAYS 13 Tensile Fabric Covered Walkway for Secondary School For Carr Manor Secondary
School in Leeds, Fordingbridge designed, manufactured and installed a series of "Hinton" style tension fabric barrel vault canopies which were hung from the steel columns of the school building and set out on a radius around the central courtyard, covering a total area of approximately 325m2. The total contract value for this was just over £68,000. The structures form an elegant and eye- catching canopy, which also provide shade for the windows and a practical covered walkway. Fordingbridge offers a
tension fabric design and construction service, providing a range of elegant design solutions offering robust,

the first, of a two phase, building project with similar canopies required to covered walkways and provide solar shading.
Design solution Once the generic steel
support system was designed for the walkways, patterns for the 44 canopies were created including 8 different sizes. The installation was kept until the end of the project to ensure the clean white fabric remained pristine for the
membrane, to 25-30 years with the PTFE membrane coating. Shapes for tension fabric
structures include: cantilevered, hypar, umbrella and double conic. Rows of sail canopies can be used to dramatic effect. Fordingbridge also offer School canopies and walkways
in steel and in
laminated timber as well as tensile fabric structures.
Tension Walkway Standard tension walkway
canopies are constructed from a combination of CHS mild steel, aluminium extrusions and stainless steel cables. The roof covering is a fire-retardant PVC fabric. The frame is available with a galvanised finish or can be powder coated to a standard colour.
