New York park creates two gates

Darien Lake Resort, Darien Center, New York, has announced $7-million of improvements for 2010, the largest investment in over a decade. Plans include new waterpark attractions, new hotel and camping facilities, and the introduction of separate gated admission for Darien Lake Theme Park and the neighbouring SplashTown waterpark.

WhiteWater gets a Wedgie

WhiteWater World at Dreamworld on the Gold Coast in Australia has unveiled the world's first SuperLOOP waterslide by ProSlide. The country’s only looping waterslide, the park has named its new attraction The Wedgie. From 58ft in the air, riders climb into a launch capsule positioned over the near vertical freefall drop, cross their ankles, put their hands behind their head and prepare to be launched into the 32-inch-diameter tunnel below. Once released, they accelerate to a top speed of 38ft per second. Riders go from top to bottom in eight seconds flat, and G-forces hold them to the side of the wall the entire way around the tight loop section.

Should riders fail to keep their ankles crossed the whole way down they will soon discover why Dreamworld called the ride The Wedgie.

Cedar Fair terminates Apollo deal

Cedar Fair and affiliates of Apollo Global Management have agreed to terminate their previously announced merger agreement. "The board has heard from Cedar Fair unitholders and it is apparent that the merger transaction does not have the required level of investor support,” announces Cedar Fair chairman, president and CEO, Dick Kinzel. Consistent with the terms of the agreement, Cedar Fair will pay Apollo $6.5 million to reimburse Apollo for expenses incurred in connection with the transaction. In addition, both parties will release each other from all obligations with respect to the proposed merger transaction as well as from any claims arising out of or relating to the merger agreement. “We are honoured and excited by the opportunity to continue to manage and operate Cedar Fair as a public company and to provide our guests with an outstanding experience," concludes Kinzel.

funnels along the course, each sloshing riders back and forth before dropping them out into the next section. The 298ft-long Cannon Ball Run culminates with a giant 40ft diameter whirlwind bowl section. Turbo Twins, meanwhile, are a pair of 308/364ft-long tube slides with translucent “peek-a-boo” sections. Measuring 1,024ft-long, the Flotation Station lazy river will be linked to the new Lazy Days Lagoon wave pool. Both are being supplied by the Aquatic Development Corp. Over at the Lodge on the Lake Hotel, there will be 10 new Forts-O-Fun themed rooms for young guests to stay and play as their parents relax close by. Included in the rooms (pictured above) will be separate kids’ bunk beds, play areas, televisions and Playstations. Darien Lake’s camping facilities will also be expanded with new Brown Bear Cabins offering a rustic getaway with all the creature comforts of home, including kitchen, fireplace and wireless internet. “These extensive additions will create a true vacation destination for travellers from all over the country,” notes Darien Lake Resort general manager, Christopher Thorpe.
