More than 3,000 buyers from Russia and beyond attended this year’s RAAPA Show in Moscow, one of two amusement industry trade shows held in the city in as many months

N

ow in its 12th year, the event was organised by the Russian Association of Amusement Parks & Attractions, with support from IAAPA, Trade Shows International and the Committee of Public

and Interregional Relations of the Moscow Government. The dates were March 15 to 17.

The venue, as always, was the All Russian Exhibition Center (VVTs), where more than 130 companies from 22 countries exhibited their wares, consolidating this show’s reputation as the premier amusement exhibition in Russia. New exhibitors this year hoping to enter the Russian market included ABC Rides from Switzerland, Bernd Wolter Design (Germany), Jakar (Poland) and World of Attractions (Germany). Held alongside the exhibition wad the annual RAAPA spring conference, which this year explored the theme, “Modern trends in the development of the entertainment market in Russia.” About 70 directors of amusement parks and FECs participated from across the country, joined by colleagues from Ukraine, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Germany, Italy and the USA. A popular session was that exploring the creation and operation of modern FECs, where a number of case studies were examined. Social events held during the week included Monday night’s opening reception at the Cosmos Hotel. A nice touch was the awarding of “RAAPA diamonds” to 40 exhibitors in recognition of their long-term exhibition participation. The RAAPA event followed almost a month after EAAPA 2010, the third such show organised by Smile-Expo and the Alliance of Partners Leisure Industry Association (SAPIR). The venue was Moscow’s CEC exhibition centre and the dates were February 17 to 19. According to the organisers, visitors came from across Russia, as well

as Latvia, Ukraine, Kirgizia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Germany, Italy and the USA. As well as the Russian participants, the event also attracted foreign exhibitors including Ital Park, KCC, Sarner and Zamperla. There was even a visit from IAAPA chairman Chip Cleary and president Charlie Bray, who took part in opening ceremony. For many years the association's top executives performed similar flag-waving duties as guests of RAAPA, so SAPIR officials must have been feeling rather pleased with themselves. Apparently IAAPA will now embark on further co- operative efforts with SAPIR.

IAAPI EXPO

Organised by the Indian Association of Amusement Parks & Industries, the 10th annual IAAAI Amusement Expo took place at the Bombay Exhibition Centre in Mumbai from March 18 to 20. The event very nearly clashed head-on with the RAAPA Show in Moscow, and will do again in 2011 now that both events are March fixtures. Of course each exhibition caters for a different audience in a distinct part of the world, but it did present a challenge for a handful of exhibitors supporting both events. In total there were more than 80 exhibitors in Mumbai and, as well as a number of international exhibitors, there was also an increase in overseas visitors. “This year’s show was well attended and we finished with more contacts than previous years,” reported Michael Turner of Gateway Ticketing. “We look forward to capitalising on these opportunities and attending IAAPI 2011.” “The Indian market is poised for tremendous growth,” noted

Prakash Vivekanand of Amusement Services International in Dubai. “This growth is not limited to prime cities but spread across satellite cities and suburbs. The increase in spending power augers well for the market and the business.” “We were pretty hopeful about the sector’s recovery from the global economic crisis last year,” remarked Juan Alvarez of CT Europa in Spain. “The show has been quite busy and what is best it that it was visited by quality visitors. Many customers closed a deal at the stand. This is good and encouraging.”

During the event IAAPI distributed its National Awards for Excellence, acknowledging and encouraging innovation and ideas within the Indian amusement industry.

IAAPI Amusement Expo returns from March 15 to 17, 2011.
