Visitors to the world's top 25 theme/amusement parks were down just 0.2% last year, according to the latest attendance report from the TEA and AECOM (see centre pages). That's a pretty respectable performance considering the state of the economy. Predictably, it was many of the North American parks that took the biggest hit, while in Latin America it was something of a mixed bag. It is the European operators who really “had it off” in 2009, with 14 of the top 20 parks posting attendance increases. There was a massive leap at Efteling, which welcomed 4 million guests for the first time. This may be the shape of things to come for the Dutch park, however, as it opens year round.

In Asia the biggest climb came at Happy Valley in Beijing, up 11.9% to 2.35 million, though the original Happy Valley in Shenzhen was down by the same percentage to 2.8 million. Clearly China's parks have some way to go before they reach the kind of attendance figures found, for example, in Japan or South Korea. The many new openings planned over the coming years, not least Disney in Shanghai, will have an important role to play in stimulating the market.
