Splashtacular receives prestigious awards

SPLASHTACULAR Entertainment’s unique waterslide-like booth received the “Best Exhibit” and the “Best of Show 2009” awards at the IAAPA Attractions Expo and WWA trade show respectively, symbolising the first time the company has received official recognition for a trade show exhibit. The company’s booth design incorporated several versions

of media to present its products and services. Reminiscent of a real-life super-size waterslide, the exhibit featured a multiple- arched design that framed up the product displays and made them open and accessible from all angles of the floor path. Showcased on the winning booth were two new patent-

pending rides - 360Rush and SplashRally. 360Rush is a high- speed thrill ride that launches two riders simultaneously down steep vertical slides into a wide bowl where riders chase each other for several revolutions before landing in a shallow braking pool. SplashRally features a six-lane water raceway in a figure-

eight layout where racers sit in two or three-seater tubes and race to the finish. The WWA trade show, which was held at Disney’s

Coronado Springs Resort and Convention Centre in Florida and represents the largest gathering of water-leisure professionals and development experts in the world, saw SplashTacular acknowledged for its originality, creativity and impact with its exhibit.

Foreclosure suit hits waterpark site

A FORECLOSURE suit has hit the site of a proposed waterpark in Chicago, US. Citizens First National Bank is looking to collect $7.6m

from a venture led by developer Joseph Buralli, who proposed the SplashH20 waterpark hotel resort and conference facility for a site in the Prairie Stone Business Park. A complaint the bank filed last month in Cook County

Circuit Court alleges that the $7.6m loan was not paid off when it was due on June 29, 2009. Construction has not begun on the project, which was proposed nearly four years ago. Its plans call for a six-storey, 240-room hotel, a 65,000sq.ft indoor waterpark, a 10,000sq.ft outdoor water area, restaurants and 19,000sq.ft of conferencing space. It is doubtful the waterpark will open next year as hoped,

given the scale of the project and the time it would take to construct.

Bunker Beach on course for expansion

BUNKER Beach waterpark in Minneapolis, US, is thought to be on track for a summer 2010 opening and crews have already laid much of the groundwork for the new attractions, which include two new tube waterslides, a 900ft lazy river and a new leisure pool featuring a climbing wall. Anoka County Parks’ director John VonDeLinde estimates

the expansion’s progress at about 80 per cent finished. The park is most well-known for its wave pool, which was built in 1988 and is the state’s largest. County officials hope the new additions, which will

add four to five acres to the site, will give the park more exposure, especially to age demographics other than teenagers. Attendance is anticipated to increase by around 20 to 30 per cent for the 2010 season.

Doubling up

A NASHVILLE waterpark is set to double in size this year according to InterPark sources. Nashville Shores is adding a 2,322sq.m wave pool and 305m lazy river float ride and renovating existing facilities. New attractions will be in an undeveloped area of the

156-hectare park east of Nashville. The privately owned park, with nine waterslides and three pools, is the major waterpark in the area.

New waterpark for Medford, Oregon

AN architectural firm local to south Medford, Oregon, in the US, is set to design a $13.5m waterpark once local residents have had their chance to offer suggestions for the project. Ogden Roemer Wilkerson Architecture will develop

plans for the park, enlisting the help of a Missouri-based company, Councilman Hunsaker Design, which specialises in waterparks. The council has agreed to pay Ogden $259,000 to develop the plans by May of this year. David Wilkerson, one of the owners of the architectural

firm, said the design would be based on the wishes of the community, including local organisations, and that a number of public workshops would be held.
