most of the time. I walk into places and they have this perception of me and sometimes I obviously don’t know. If you do one tiny thing in that direction then it’s, “Well he is like that, isn’t he?” Whatever that is and then people react to you differently, sometimes they’re not themselves when they interact with you because of this perception.

HAS YOUR PERCEPTION OF THE MEDIA CHANGED NOW THAT YOU’RE ON THE OTHER SIDE?

Well it’s very different. Brit- ish, American media are very, very different. Here they report what they see and Europe is very much more the gossip and the story behind the golf. I can say I have a tough job when I’m out here week after week. It’s an important time for golfers to really show their personalities, or if anything, tweak it. Put themselves in a bit more of a performance state to make something happen even if it’s not there. The good thing is that golf is certainly in the spotlight right now for other reasons. So the guys have a real opportunity to show everybody—“Wow, look who I am.” A couple of these young-

sters are very interesting. They’re global. You’ve got Rory McIlroy from Ireland and Ryo Ishikawa from Japan, Rickie Fowler from America and they’re all under 21. That’s pretty cool; they’re going to be interesting characters out here. Mix it up with some of the old boys in their 11th hour giving it a good go, Ernie Els and people like that. The Tour is good, the Tour is interesting.

WHO IS THE BEST INTERVIEW ON

THE PGA TOUR? Ryan Moore is very interesting, he speaks well. I go out and talk to the players, what they’re doing with their games and some of them are nondescript. But Ryan’s not

like that. He’s changed his clubs; he’s using clubs with lofts on them instead of numbers and I thought that was pretty curious.

LASTLY, TALK ABOUT THE PERSONAL SIGNIFICANCE OF RECENTLY RECEIVING KNIGHTHOOD FROM THE QUEEN. It was

a great honor, something you never can imagine. It was quite funny how my mind went straight back to being

a 16-year-old kid on my way to the golf course when I started playing and practicing. I left school when I was 16 and my mind went straight back to that. It was my first thought which was quite weird. I’m honored because it’s pretty rare. There’s only Sir Henry Cotton so it’s a very, very nice honor. I’m enjoy- ing the fun of it and the seriousness of it—not really the seriousness, but the protocol side of it.
