Throughout the surrounding forest, clumps of snow from sagging bows of Ponderosa pine fall silently into fresh powder, while a half- dozen icicles hanging from a cabin’s eve like some crystal pan flute grow perceptively longer in the morning sun. In the distance, on the flanks of Lookout Mountain in the California Sierra, tiny figures traverse a ski run, leaning into their edges and cutting a shower of white spray with each turn. Only a hundred yards away on this date in early March, a couple on cross-country skis glides through what looks like a narrow meadow.

In about 80 days and with the snow

long melted, that Nordic trail gives way to the 10th fairway of the Tom Fazio- designed Martis Camp golf course, a mesmerizing layout just opened for its second full summer of play. The pace of construction on some 30 Martis Camp homes that proceeded through the win- ter only quickens with warmer weather and longer daylight, as will work on the 50,000 square-foot Camp Lodge. A combination clubhouse, locker room, fine dining room, spa and exercise facility—set on a scenic rock outcrop- ping overlooking the 18th green— the Lodge is scheduled to open in the summer of 2011. Resort continues its development into the residential jewel of the Sierra. Of the low-density property’s 650

home sites—some are slightly less than half an acre but most average 1.75 acres or more—about 250 have already been sold. Despite the challenged economy, still more sales are in the works, with prospective residents visiting weekly. “It’s clear that the individuals purchas- ing homesites and building homes here are closely aligned with the vision of the development team that bought the property in 1999,” reflects Mark Johnson, Martis Camp’s general manager and executive vice president. “The intent is to provide the highest standards of excellent service, and in a place with activities to engage several generations of a family and their guests. Our principal partners often talk about the concept of ‘QTR or Quality Time Remaining.’ From what we’ve seen in
