More Sand
If players don’t fi nd the Pacifi c Ocean they are bound to fi nd the sand via 16 newly added or altered bunkers that pinch the already tight fairways. Nos. 3, 4 and 15 are dramati- cally more penal from the teeing ground and call for precision. The fi ve bunkers on 15 even include a pot bunker in the middle of the fairway.
Transportation
Spectators will park at California State University Monterey Bay/Fort Ord and shuttle via busses to and from the golf course and get dropped off at the Pebble Beach Equestrian Center. For spectators staying closer to the course look for shuttles originat- ing from Cannery Row and Carmel Plaza.
After-hours hangout
Britannia Arms on Alvarado Street in Monterey and Jack Londons Bar & Grill between Dolores and Fifth Ave. in Carmel will fi ll with chatter and knowledge from
inside the ropes. Both spots are caddie hangouts and two of only a handful of bars where the beers are not overpriced.
Experience the course like the pros
Play Pebble Beach Golf Links up until the Saturday before championship week (June 12) and again Tuesday after the event concludes (June 22). The usual rack rate of $495 applies plus the resort’s stay-to-play policy. A summer-long opportunity to create your own history.

Recent course changes approved by part-owner Arnold Palmer have brought the world’s biggest water hazard more into play. A shifting of the par-5 sixth fairway aided by bunkers on the left side bring water into play off the tee.
Play Golf
POPPY HILLS
Poppy Hills will run double shotguns Monday through Sunday of championship week. Tee off at 7:30 a.m. and catch the afternoon play at Pebble Beach or watch the pros play in the morning and make the 1:30 p.m. shotgun. NCGA mem-
bers pay $95 ($225 for public). The NCGA-member course will be in championship shape; recent conditioning changes have extended fairways and fi rmed the greens.
PACIFIC GROVE
Pacifi c Grove Golf Links on the northwest tip of the Peninsula has deep Pebble Beach connections with a back nine created by Pebble Beach architect Jack Neville situated almost entirely on the ocean. When you get to the 12th hole, with its tee box adja- cent to the Pacifi c and your aim pointed directly across Monterey Bay, you will hopefully remember that it only cost $25 (twilight rate) for the experience.
