Casual Water

1

By Ryan Gregg, Director of Education

El Niño has brought wetter-than-average conditions throughout California this year. The additional rain is a blessing for California and especially our golf courses; however, this means that when we play this spring we may have to deal with casual water. Before we can proceed with our relief options for

casual water we need to know what it is. Casual water is any temporary accumulation of water on the course that is not in a water hazard and is visible before or after you’ve taken your stance.Snow and ice

can be considered casual water, but not dew or frost. If your ball lies in or touches the casual water, your stance is in it, or your area of intended swing is affected, you are entitled to relief, without penalty.

If your ball lies through the green or on the

teeing ground you are required to determine your nearest point of

relief. Generally, this is the spot on the course

where if the ball were so positioned there would

no longer be interference by the casual water.

Once the nearest point of relief has been established, you are

required to drop the ball within one club-length of that spot.

There are three types of relief from

casual water, and the relief procedures are based on the location of your ball.
