Online in Time

By Jim Cowan, Director of Course Rating & Handicapping

AT LONG LAST the

NCGA is pleased to unveil its Online

Handicap Certifi cation Seminar. This offering is available in the Handicap section of the NCGA website. The USGA requires every club in

the country that wishes to offer offi cial handicaps to complete a licensing agree- ment each and every four-year cycle of the Handicap System (we are presently in the 2008-2011 cycle). One com- ponent of this licensing process is the completion of an approved curriculum regarding the operation and admin- istration of the Handicap System. The NCGA Online Handicap Cer- tifi cation Seminar represents such approved curriculum. NCGA clubs now have the option of completing this online presentation or attending a live seminar once every four years to satisfy the USGA requirement. The advantages of the online

seminar are obvious. . .time, dis- tance, convenience, cost. Clubs may complete the seminar on their own terms, whenever/wherever they like and at their own pace. Two-to-three live seminars will continue to be offered annually in the late spring in densely populated areas for those who prefer the back-and-forth of questions and answers. Long before the USGA deemed

such education the law of the land, the NCGA had its own certifi cation requirement, but with a little twist. The USGA requirement states

that a representative of a club must complete a seminar between 2008 and 2011 (then again between 2012 and 2015, etc.). If an individual completed a seminar in 2008 and then left the club in 2009, that club is still deemed to be in compliance with the USGA requirement for the 2008-2011 cycle.

The NCGA’s program, which

predates the USGA’s by four years, requires each and every member club to maintain a certifi ed representa- tive on its roster at all times. Should an individual leave, the club falls out of compliance with the NCGA requirement (though it is given a year to re-secure its status). Clubs out of compliance lose eligibility to enter and compete in NCGA tournaments. So fi re up our online seminar and

kill two birds (USGA and NCGA requirement) with one stone.
