Throughout the building, monu-
ment-lovers will recognize the work of Felix de Weldon, who created the Arlington, Va., Marine Corps War Me- morial, popularly known as the Iwo Jima memorial, among other sculp- tures. The club displays a miniature version of that icon (right) in one of its reception rooms. A dozen other pieces (such as those above) hide out in vari- ous rooms and hallways.
Library
All the art pieces belong to the club’s 18,000-volume special library, which focuses on the military arts and sci- ences. Within the library itself (next page), books and military curios cover nearly every surface, like a scene from a Victorian novel. A de Weldon bust greets guests on their way to visit librarian Aleksandra
Zajackowski, but the bust behind her desk is one that’s gathered many more interested glances. It’s the bullet-pocked death mask of Gen. Calixto Garcia, a Cuban revolutionary whose story might be familiar to mili- tary plebes from Elbert Hubbard’s essay “A Message to Garcia.” The ANC was one of the last stops for the Navy lieutenant who delivered the renowned letter to Garcia.
