W
riting this column,
I have the challenge of trying to forecast the fu- ture. After all, magazine deadlines are well in
advance of the issue month. Sometimes the crystal ball can be a bit cloudy that far out! For example, as I was writing this note,
Congress passed health care reform legisla- tion. I’m betting your first question at that time was, “Will this bill negatively affect the TRICARE medical insurance program?” The simple answer — as you should know by now — is “no,” but you would have had to wait about six weeks after bill passage to read the answer in Military Officer. So how do you get reliable information
quickly? If you have a computer, stay tuned to MOAA’s Web Base,
www.moaa.org. Or subscribe to our e-newsletters at www
.moaa.org/email to receive current news and be entered in a quarterly sweepstakes. You receive one entry for each e-newsletter you choose to receive, so you may have as many as five entries for every drawing. This quarter, our prize is a vacation package from MOAA Travel (
www.moaatravel.org). What better way is there to stay informed — and maybe get lucky and win a prize? One thing I can forecast with certainty is
that May will be a month to honor military families. For MOAA, that’s a continuous process, because the association’s mission is supporting military people. But that’s not true for most of the nation. For this reason, in 2004, Congress adopted a resolution designating May as National Military Ap-

preciation Month, “calling all Americans to remember those who gave their lives in defense of freedom and to honor the men and women of all our armed services who have served and are now serv- ing our country, together with their families.” Events include Military
Spouse Appreciation Day (May 7), Victory in Europe Day (May 8), Armed Forces Day (May 15), and Memorial Day (May 31). Each of these is an opportunity to remind the nation of the sacrifices mili- tary people and their families have made to preserve our liberties. In the spirit of the month, our story
“Benefits for You,” page 56, highlights how military spouses can take advantage of the Military Spouse Residency Relief Act, the Post-9/11 GI Bill, and the Military Spouse Career Advancement Accounts program. As Adm. Mike Mullen, USN, chairman of
the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said in a 2009 mes- sage: “Each May, our nation pauses to pay tribute to our past, present, and future mili- tary spouses. … Without our families, those of us in uniform cannot serve. And truly, our spouses serve just as much as we do.”
