Retirement Living
Lost and Found
A
ll companies are required to make a good-faith effort to
find the owners of dormant ac-
counts. If they cannot they are obligated to turn the funds over to the state. “Escheat” funds often arise when people move frequently or are difficult to locate. Items typically left behind include: n abandoned payroll checks; n bank-account, escrow-account, and safe-deposit-box contents; n insurance policy payouts; n stocks, mutual funds, bonds, and dividends; n deposits for apartments or utilities; n tuition refunds; and n inheritance money. To find out if you or a relative have
any unclaimed money or property, visit
www.missingmoney.com. The
site is supported by the National Asso- ciation of Unclaimed Property Adminis- trators and the National Association of State Treasurers. Click on Search Tips for help. You can
search for a family or business name. Your listing, if it appears, will show the last known place of residence of the name you searched under and the name of the company that submitted the funds. (A few states are not yet in the site’s data- base. Use a search engine to look for “un- claimed funds+name of your state.”) To file a claim for money or property
for which you are the legal heir, follow the Web site’s instructions. Processing times vary from state to state, but you should receive a check within one to four months.
