From the Field:
Virginia Council of Chapters
Virginia Council of Chapters (VCOC) members traveled to Rich- mond, Va., Jan. 25 to lobby their state legislators. Before arriving, VCOC members joined members of 22 state veterans’ organizations that compose the Joint Leadership Council (JLC) and established six legislative goals for 2010, including real estate tax breaks for disabled veterans and adequate funding for the Virginia War Memorial. (To view a list of the JLC’s goals, visit
www.virginiamoaa.com.) A record 66 council members at-
tended and obtained 74 cosponsors’ signatures on pending legislation the JLC supports. Members also
met with high-ranking state gov- ernment officials, including Gov. Bob McDonnell, who is a member of the Richmond Chapter.
Southern Tier (N.Y.) Chapter
Southern Tier (N.Y.) Chapter mem- bers supported Angels Over Iraq and Afghanistan by packing and shipping 24 boxes of comfort-care items and letters to deployed U.S. troops. Chap- ter members contributed approxi- mately $1,000 to the program. In addition, chapter members sup-
port Ziggy’s Quick Quilters, which ships homemade quilts signed by well-wishers to hospitalized veterans. Currently, members are working with a local church to start a program at the VA Medical Center in Bingham-
ton, N.Y., which will teach hospital- ized veterans to play the guitar.
Richmond (Va.) Chapter
The Richmond (Va.) Chapter contin- ues to find ways to support wounded and ill veterans. Recently, Col. Bill Barrett Jr., USA-Ret., the chapter’s personal affairs chair, started a pro- gram through which chapter mem- bers and their spouses will visit with patients at the Hunter Holmes Mc- Guire VA Medical Center and Sitter and Barfoot Veterans Care Center in Richmond and the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Chapter members also have con-
tributed $1,000 to Fisher House and $3,000 apiece to Virginia’s Wounded Warrior Program and Families of the Wounded Fund.
