Showroom Top Picks
DESSIN FOURNIR
By Zachary Scott
The Dessin Fournir Companies began with a signa-
ture line of luxury furniture and lighting inspired by
18th and 19th century European styles, committed to
the principle of being the ultimate resource for design-
ers. Chuck Comeau and Len Larson founded Dessin in
1993 because they felt there were significant gaps in the
furniture market, specifically in antique reproduction.
Their success came naturally, and after reaching great
heights in the antique reproduction market, co-founder
Chuck Comeau was determined to see the company ex-
pand to include other lines and styles. He oversaw their
acquisition of Rose Cumming and Palmer Hargrave, and
created a powerhouse design firm in Plainville, Kansas.
The Dessin Fournir showroom in New York is one
of the city’s most popular destinations for fine repro-
ductions and high quality designs. The manager of the
New York showroom Jay Shemwell has risen from the
ground up at Dessin, starting as a member of the sales
team. DTM asked Shemwell to select five of his top
picks featured in the showroom.
Shemwell’s Top Picks
Rose Cumming Silk Velvet II: Dessin Fournir ac-
quired Rose Cumming to provide them with a luxurious,
bold line of textiles to add to their product lines. The
Silk Velvet II Collection is a perfect example of why
Rose Cumming has been a fantastic edition. “This gor-
geous fabric follows the Rose Cumming tradition with
its beautiful texture and range of 16 rich colors. Silk
Velvet II is an instant classic and favorite of New York
designers,” reveals Shemwell.
Christopher Matson of Christopher Robert Matson
Interiors in New York describes the Silk Velvet II as a
cozy luxury for stately yet welcoming rooms. Matson

was immediately impressed by the classic nature of the
silk. “The bottle-green colorway is reminiscent of an-

cient woods, appearing dark and alive with just a glim-
mer of light. It was a perfect anchor in a recent design of
my clients library,” Matson revealed. He appreciates the
classic opulence of the Silk Velvet II Collection and was
very pleased with the final result of the library.
