Showroom Top Picks
ATELIER LAPCHI
By Emma Sommers
Lapchi, founded in 2001 with a firm commitment to
producing and marketing the highest quality handmade
Tibetan area rugs, entered the marketplace with a bold
departure from the standard operating procedure for rug
companies. Rather than focusing on in-stock standard
rugs, Lapchi chose to promote its capacity to custom-
make carpets to designer and end-user specifications.
This model was put into full effect with the opening
of the Atelier Lapchi showroom in Los Angeles in the
spring of 2006. A selection of full-size pieces are dis-
played with a clean, elegant aesthetic in this showroom,
as well as in its sister showroom in Chicago’s Merchan-
dise Mart, along with displays containing a variety of
corner pieces.
Andrew Neave, showroom manager for Atelier Lap-
chi recently revealed his showroom top picks to DTM.
Neave’s Top Picks
Mirage: An artistic interpretation of the optical phenom-
enon of bending light rays and refractions, “Mirage is the
essence of the modern mood,” remarks Neave. “Reminis-
cent of abstract expressionist Mark Rothko’s emotive can-
vases, the Mirage pattern can hold a room together with
boldly shifting color alone, or it can subtly accent promi-
nent sculptural furnishings when a background is required.
When less is more, Mirage is a beautifully minimalist op-
tion,” asserts Neave.
Steve Kadlec of Kadlec Architecture + Design in Chi-
cago designed the lobby for The Residences at 900 North
Michigan to balance the building’s strong modern archi-
tecture with a simple color palette and profiles. “We se-
lected the Mirage carpet from Atelier Lapchi for its simple,
www
saturated color and soft pattern. Mirage’s bold apple green
color complements the mahogany-toned millwork panel-

ing and white stone while providing a visual anchor for the
y
seating area,” Kadlec explains, adding, “We specify Lap-
chi carpet not only for their design and quality but, as im-
portantly, their service and custom capabilities. With them,
Scott Shigle
you know exactly what you are going to get.”
