Last issue, we introduced an outline for implementing social media in your mar-
keting plan (still available on our Web site at www.designtrade.net/socialmedia). At
that time our Facebook page had about 1,900 fans who had opted in for our frequent
product posts, survey questions, applications, blog updates, news, events, etc. Since
then, we hosted our first “Give Us Your Best Shot” photo competition on Facebook
and are pleased to crown our first Design Trade Superstar, Verónica Volani-Inza (see
page 130)!
It was a simple concept: submit a shot of your best residential installation and ask
your Facebook friends to vote for it on our page, www.facebook.com/designtrade. To
vote (or “like”), friends had to become fans of Design Trade. We received 130 entries
and after two short weeks of frenetic promoting and voting, our fan total more than
doubled! The contestants received hundreds of votes and comments, the competition
was spirited but polite and the feedback from new fans was overwhelmingly posi-
tive. We have successfully tapped into the beauty of social media — friends inviting
friends to discover something new and exciting.
At Design Trade, we are all about promoting the interior design trade. Even if
many of our fans are not qualified buyers of high-end home or commercial furnish-
ings, they probably know someone who is. And that makes each of them well worth
our investment. Once again, we encourage you — whether you are a designer, manu-
facturer, showroom, design center or design enthusiast — to partner with us as we
celebrate the people, products and projects from around the country that make up our
uniquely creative business both in print and on the Web.
In this issue, we introduce a treasure trove of new products and installations, great
advice from three of our industry organizations and a peek at several events from
around the country. It’s always fun to make a connection and in this issue it is a
personal pleasure to feature our friends at the Blake House showroom located at the
charming Laguna Design Center. Blake House owner Sandy MacLennan and I dis-
covered years ago that we are both native Missourians (and are now equally far from
there on opposite coasts) and both grew up enjoying the annual Missouri State Fair in
her hometown of Sedalia, Missouri. Please enjoy the picks from this showroom with
“Show-Me State” origins.
Here in our own backyard, Editor-in-Chief Kelly Sweeney had the pleasure of
experiencing the Eau Spa at the Ritz-Carlton in the toney town of Manalapan on the
island of Palm Beach. You’ll be jealous of her visit after reading her account begin-
ning on page 114 as she is still glowing! And don’t miss our latest Great Finds prod-
uct section beginning on page 53. I particularly like the Brentano Fabrics Panorama
Sheer for its style and versatility. If you like high-performance kitchens, be sure to
check out the company that partnered with Porsche Design and designer Jorge Pensi
on page 30.
We hope that these articles and all the others will convince you that we are one of
your biggest fans and are here to support you and your trade. And who knows, maybe
you or one of your Facebook friends will become our next Design Trade Superstar!
