Yacht Installation
Carefree
Cruising
By Emma Sommers
The players: Scott Cole, president of Ardeo Designs in Bainbridge
Island, Washington, and Roberta and Ken Williams, founders of Sierra
On-Line and creators of Mystery House, the first computer adventure
game to feature graphics.
The game: Complete a new-build 68-foot Nordhavn aft pilothouse
expedition yacht — the first of its kind.
Roberta and Ken Williams, retired computer gaming moguls and
owners of a Nordhavn 62-foot yacht, recently decided they had out-
grown their current vessel and wanted a larger one that was still small
enough to operate without a crew. They approached Nordhavn, who at
the time was building 72 and 76-foot yachts, and requested something
smaller than 72 feet. Nordhavn decided to build them a new model
— a 68-foot aft pilothouse expedition yacht. Dan Streech, president
of Nordhavn, suggested that the Williamses contact Scott Cole who
had designed the first contemporary and traditional interiors for the
new Nordhavn 72-foot forward pilothouse and 76-foot aft pilothouse
expedition yachts. Cole and the Williamses immediately hit it off and
Cole met with them at their winter home in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico,
to discuss their custom interior.
Roberta Williams wanted the boat to have a period look — simi-
lar to a yacht built in the 1920s, with wood plank ceilings, plenty of
teak, wainscoting and romantic sconces with silk shades. Her second
request was that her 14’ x 11’ antique Kashan area rug be used in the
salon. The salon was designed to fit this rug and the materials and
colors for the room were inspired by it.
As this was the first yacht in this new model series for Nordhavn,
one of Cole’s objectives was to improve the yacht builder’s original
interior general arrangement layout (G.A.). Exterior doors and win-
dows were relocated, stairway layouts were improved to make them
more comfortable and safe, the heads (bathrooms) were reconfigured
and all areas were refined. The layout redesign also took the William-
ses dog Shelby into consideration, as she always travels with them.
Shelby has her own doggie door that leads to an exterior deck, the
stairs are all carpeted and the exterior stainless steel railings feature
www
additional lower rails to prevent her from falling off the deck.
For the salon dining area, the Williamses wanted a freestanding din- .designtrade.net
ing table that seated six instead of a built-in settee. They liked a dining
table and chairs designed by Brad Gallahar of Gallahar Fine Furniture
that they found at a showroom in Seattle, but that specific table would
not fit in their salon because of the size. Roberta Williams asked Cole
to modify the dimensions and add an ebony inlay to the table and
