‘There is no such
uncertainty as a sure thing’
R
obert Burns, Scotland’s national bard said that. He
said a lot more too between 1759 and 1796 – and
Scotland’s most famous poet so inspired award-
winning photo-duo Ross Gillespie and Tricia Malley that they
decided to create their unique ‘As Others See Us’ exhibition
and series of portraits to celebrate the 250th anniversary of
the great man’s birth.
They set about selecting prominent and adopted Scots including
actors, artists, writers, a scientist, a farmer, the First Minister of
Scotland, a human rights lawyer, an entrepreneur and a clan
chief – and asked them all to choose and respond to a quotation
from the bard ‘and to reflect on the continued relevance of Burns
in modern Scotland’.
Litebook caught up with Ross and Tricia for this exclusive
interview at the National Gallery in Edinburgh, where their
exhibition runs until November 8.
This couple has worked together for 20 years under the
commercial name of ‘broad daylight’ – and their website
(www.broaddaylightltd.co.uk) notes: ‘They have an instinctive
eye for capturing the character and personality behind the
subject’.
And with this project they needed those skills and more.
They work in a unique way when shooting. “We have one camera
and we chop and change” says Tricia. “The truth is we don’t
know who has pressed the shutter on any particular shot – we’ve
always worked like that.
