Move the Body,
Open the Mind
on the Blueway
T
he fourth annual Calusa
Blueway Paddling Festival
returns with more than 50
mostly-free events, including
paddle races, catch-and-release kayak fishing tournaments,
nature and cultural tours, demonstrations and a speaker series,
from October 25 through November 2.
The Great Calusa Paddling Trail encompasses 190 miles,
with 40 separate inlets. Its path is home to 40 percent of
Florida’s endangered and threatened species and more than
300 bird species.
Betsy Clayton, waterways coordinator for Lee County Parks
and Recreation and co-coordinator of the festival, says the
festival offers “a chance to witness Southwest Florida’s wildlife
without disturbing or endangering them, as you might with a
powerboat. Being up close and personal with the creatures that
frequent the area allows you to reflect on the environment and
the effects of everyday life.”
