“Ahh… All is well in my world,” I remember sighing on a
magical day last month (pictured) while kayaking on my
favorite spot on Higgins Lake, in northern Michigan. All
the elements came together that day—perfect weather, a
kayak sitting at the end of the dock waiting for me and at
last, some free time. Priceless, indeed.
Gliding across the top of this crystal clear lake, I real-
ize that only someone like me, who has been observing
it for years, would notice the changes in the ecosystem
below. Staying connected through time with a piece of land we love may be one
of the best ways to tune into what the Earth is telling us. It reminds us of what we
are fighting to care for and preserve, and what’s at risk now.
The turtle gracing this month’s cover is another gentle reminder of our pre-
cious role as stewards of life. It captures the essence of this Environment issue, the
message of our interconnectedness with our fragile ecosystems.
Southwest Florida has a lot of catching up to do when it comes to creating
sustainable living initiatives. Many other regions are doing a much better job. As
the CEO of our franchised network of Natural Awakenings magazines, I’m aware
of environmental progress underway in 68 communities around the country. This
year, I especially tuned into Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, when he spoke of
how that city’s agencies are implementing
a more sustainable form of government.

of them. Special kudos to Cloe Waterfield, for her efforts to cut greenhouse gases
