Naples Leading
the Way
to Sustainability
T
he International Day of
Climate Action, October
24, at Fleischmann Park in
Naples will bring attention to
the importance of the number
350, with a local event that
jumpstarts a week of “Naples Leading the Way to Sustainability” activities. “This
local event is part of an international effort to influence policy change at the United
Nations Climate Change Conference in Denmark in December,” says Dianne Rhodes,
facilitator of the event. Naples will be part of more than a coalition of 1,000 com-
munities and 100 nations around the globe involved in this grassroots event.
Bill McKibben, a best-selling environmental author, began spreading the word
about 350 when he learned of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration
(NASA) scientist James Hansen’s finding that life as we know it on Earth is not sus-
tainable when the amount of carbon dioxide (a greenhouse gas) in the air exceeds
350 parts per million.
Saturday events include a bicycle safety rodeo sponsored by the Naples Path-
ways Coalition, Live Art—a children’s project, music and dance and a dedication
by Mayor Bill Barnett at The Preserve. Other events throughout the week include
a Dark Lights Night and stargazing with a local astronomy club, discussion on the
Florida coastline, Think Local Day and a Celebration at the Gulf on November 1.
