Forestry: a word in New Zealand that
generally brings to mind two images – the
plantation forests of the central plateau and the
industrial sites where the wood is processed.
The reality is the Forestry sector offers a wide
variety of opportunities for graduates in Forestry
Science or Engineering, in areas such as the
core production sectors of planning, processing,
manufacturing (wood products, panels, pulp
and paper or tissue conversion) to the support
sectors of marketing, sales, IT, HR, training,
storage and distribution.
Increasingly, there are also opportunities in the
all-important biosecurity and research sectors,
as well as with land-management based
employers such as regional or city councils
and government agencies. The advent of the
Emissions Trading Scheme brings another
facet to the industry. As well as all of these
areas there is also the issue of management of
New Zealand’s indigenous biodivesty on both
government-managed and private lands.
Graduates have the added
advantage that the training
and skills they acquire in
New Zealand are recognised
by Australian and other
international forestry companies,

In 2006 the forest industries sector accounted
for 3.4 per cent of Gross Domestic Product
(GDP) and had in excess of $3.1 billion in
earned from
international sales. It is expected that this

will increase by 2025 to 14 per cent of GDP

and sales in excess of $14 billion. The sector
will need to employ an increasing number
of people to make this happen; from today’s
employed nationally
current employment base, with more than
120,000 directly or indirectly employed in
forestry, an excess of 310,000 will be needed by
2025.
