has been instrumental in New Zealand’s
dominance in world markets and is currently
responsible for over a third of the international
dairy trade. The international demand for food
and dairy products is high and New Zealand’s
contribution to meeting this demand will
continue to increase.
Sheep & Beef
New Zealand is the second largest wool exporter
in the world, with exports for sheep and beef
products totalling $6.5 billion annually. With the
large numbers of farms converting to dairy and
drought experienced in some regions, there
has been a drop in the sheep and beef cattle
numbers, resulting in a reduction in total exports
for this sector. However, the long-term outlook
is still positive, with growing demand for wool in
Asia and tightening lamb and beef supplies.
Wine
A more recent growth market in New Zealand
is wine production. Wine exports have soared
and the area used for grape growing and wine
production has more than doubled since 1990.
The Nelson-Marlborough region is the largest
wine-growing region, with around 12,000
hectares of vineyards. New Zealand is becoming
increasingly recognised for high quality wines,
and this sector will require skilled people to
ensure continued growth and success.
Outlook
New Zealand as a whole is experiencing a
significant labour shortage which is being
strongly felt in agriculture and horticulture and
has resulted in an increased need to employ
appropriate staff from overseas. The agricultural
industry employs an estimated 11.4 per cent
of the New Zealand workforce (nearly half of
these in support services) and the industry is
expected to increase its revenue by 24 per cent
over the next five years, further increasing the
demand for skilled people. Agriculture is an
exciting growth industry and currently offers
huge opportunities.
