Engineers generally fall into two categories: those employed
within industry and those employed as consultants. For the
former, the focus is typically on managing maintenance work
and capital projects on time and to budget, and improving plant
reliability and performance. The benefit of working within one
organisation is that the engineer will be exposed to all facets of
that operation, including, production, health and safety, financial
management and human relations.
The consulting engineer adds value by providing specialist
support services to his industrial colleagues, such as managing
capital projects, helping drive reliability improvements or
assisting with change management programs. Although
the industrial engineer gains exposure to all aspects of an
organisation, the consulting engineer can share “best practice”
knowledge gained from working with a number of different
clients in a given specialist area.
Home-grown opportunities
Engineers are in demand world-wide so many New Zealand
graduates seek and gain work overseas. The Institute of
Professional Engineers in New Zealand (IPENZ) reported in June
2007 that New Zealand needed to double the number of civil
engineering graduates to ease shortages. While working
overseas has its attractions, there are huge
benefits to gaining experience with an
employer in New Zealand. Graduates often
find they are given greater responsibility
sooner with smaller, domestic companies,

and are able to work on a wider variety of
projects. In addition, many companies work with partners
and clients overseas, providing opportunity for travel.
There are opportunities for graduates in almost every sector,
including manufacturing, construction, energy, defence,
transport, forestry, mining and technology. Employers range
from large public to small private firms, as well as specialist
engineering consultancies.
