May Accelerate Knee Arthritis

atients who received corticosteroid injections


to relieve knee arthritis pain experienced faster progression of the disease compared to those treated with hyaluronic acid, according to new research published in Radiology. The study found that hyaluronic acid injections were associated with less joint damage and slower disease progression, even two years after treatment. In contrast,


corticosteroid injections led to greater structural deterioration in the knee, particularly in cartilage, when compared to both the hyaluronic acid group and a control group that received no injection. “A single corticosteroid injection led to significantly greater structural damage in the knee joint over two years, especially in cartilage,” said Upasana Upadhyay Bharadwaj, M.D., the study’s lead author.


HIGHLY PROCESSED FOODS LESSEN MUSCLE QUALITY People who eat diets high in ultra-processed foods have higher amounts of fat stored inside thigh muscles, according to researchers at the University of California, San Francisco. Previous research found that a decline in thigh muscle quality could be associated with the onset and progression of knee osteoarthritis.

Best Non-Drug Therapies for Knee Arthritis

nee braces, water therapy, and exercise are the most beneficial non-drug therapies for knee arthritis,


according to a study published in PLOS One. In an analysis of more than 100 clinical trials, knee braces were most effective in reducing pain, improving function, and relieving stiffness. Hydrotherapy — exercises or treatments performed in warm water — was particularly effective at easing pain, and general exercise was effective at improving both pain and physical function. High-intensity laser therapy and shock wave therapy showed some benefits, while ultrasound consistently scored the lowest in effectiveness. These therapies provided relief without the gastrointestinal or cardiovascular risks often associated with common pain medications.

COVID: VACCINES REDUCE SEVERITY OF ILLNESS, DEATH Data from eight states indicates that


receiving updated COVID-19 vaccines offers a strong defense against critical illness. While protection against mild and moderate illness decreased over time, updated vaccines reduced emergency and urgent care visits by 19%, hospitalizations by 29%, and admissions to intensive care units or in-hospital deaths by 48% during the first seven to 299 days after vaccination. Results were published in JAMA Network Open.


VITAMIN D: SUPPLEMENTS SLOW AGING Vitamin D3 may play a protective


role in slowing the aging process by preserving telomeres — the protective caps at the ends of chromosomes that naturally shorten with age and are linked to the onset of age-related diseases. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition followed participants over four years and measured telomere length in white blood cells at baseline, year two, and year four. Individuals who took vitamin D3 experienced significantly less telomere shortening compared to those who received a placebo. Over the four-year period, the vitamin D3 group showed the equivalent of nearly three fewer years of biological aging than the placebo group.


OBESITY: WORSE CONCUSSION RECOVERY People who are obese, even if they are


athletes, are slower to recover from a concussion, according to a study published in Sports Medicine. Elite college athletes and military cadets with a body mass index (BMI) equal to or above 30, which indicates obesity, had increased inflammatory biomarkers, more severe concussion symptoms, and worse cognition following a concussion than those with lower BMI.


DEMENTIA: RISK MAY DEPEND ON WHERE YOU LIVE Researchers from the University of


California, San Francisco, found that compared to the Mid-Atlantic region, dementia rates were 25% higher in the Southeast. The Northwest and Rocky Mountains were 23% higher, while the South was 18% higher, the Southwest was 13% higher, and the Northeast was 7% higher.
