ov. gavin new- som, 58, who is going to run for president, has a unique attri-


bute: his ability to lie. Not just to lie, but to lie


earnestly. The California Demo-


crat’s lies are so bold, they’re the political equivalent of a Hollywood illusion — a syn- thetic truth. Among many, there are


two examples of Newsom’s aggressive prevarication and casual association with the truth. In late November 2023,


Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Newsom debated each other for 90 minutes. De- Santis aimed to promote his bid for president while contrasting and comparing Florida’s success with Cali- fornia’s failure. Newsom, his presiden-


tial ambitions dependent on whether then-President Joe Biden was really going to run again, leaned hard into the role of being the only high-profile Demo- crat on the left able to co-


herently string paragraphs together. But DeSantis’ attacks on


California’s failings, or his insults of Newsom, left the Californian unfazed. It was as if Newsom


viewed the encounter as would a lying, corrupt bil- lionaire arguing with the pool boy — it didn’t matter if the pool boy was right; it wasn’t his place to point out the pool owner’s errors. Fast-forward to New-


som’s sprawling four-hour mid-July podcast interview with Shawn Ryan. One of Ryan’s only game attempts to pin Newsom down hap- pened early on, as he joked about all the Californians who’ve moved to his home state of Tennessee. Newsom immediately


went on the offensive, saying: “You hit me right there, man. The California exit. By the way, complete bull[s***] now. The last two years, we’ve seen significant growth in California’s popu- lation. So, it’s reversed.” The data says Newsom’s claim was based entirely on
