Despite eff orts to get rival candi-
dates to drop out of the race, New York still seems likely to hand Zohran Mamdani, 33, the keys to City Hall. His election would be a disaster for
Gotham, the nickname fi rst given to New York City in 1807 by Washing- ton Irving to denote the foolishness of its inhabitants, and later represented as the dark, crime-ridden, corrupt metropolis of Batman movies. Critics fear that under a Mamdani
administration, it will take more than Batman to save New York City. Mamdani supports a variety of hard-
left policies that, critics charge, would bankrupt the city, send crime soaring, and force the middle class to fl ee. In a late August Siena poll, Mam-
dani, at 44%, came in 19 points ahead of second place former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, at 25%. Republican Curtis Sliwa was at

Mayor Adams and Curtis Sliwa drop out. That would make it a head-to- head contest between Mamdani and Cuomo and avoid splitting the anti- Mamdani vote. But in a Gotham-AARP poll the following week, likely voters told pollsters that in a direct head-to- head contest — if Adams and Sliwa dropped out — they would still choose Mamdani. That poll had Mamdani at 42, Cuomo at 23, Sliwa at 16, and Adams at 9. The survey was taken before the post-Labor Day TV ad blitz by the campaigns that would likely tighten the race.
