FISH OIL CAN KILL CANCER CELLS Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish have been popular for years as a way to fight heart disease. One of its components, DHA or docosahexaenoic acid, is essential to brain function, vision, the regulation of inflammation, and has also been associated with a reduction in the incidence of cancer. Now, researchers at Belgium’s University of Louvain
have found the mechanism:
DHA overpowers tumor cells by causing them to oxidize and die. Normally, these cells store fatty acids in liquid droplets, protecting them from oxidation. But when saturated with large amounts of DHA, the cells are overwhelmed and can’t store the DHA. The tumor cells oxidize and die. When DHA was added to cell cultures, the cancer cells appeared to grow at first, but then imploded. “DHA literally poisons them,” the researchers explained. Furthermore, when scientists added DHA to the diets of mice with cancer, they found tumor growth was significantly reduced when compared to those mice fed a conventional diet.
LOW RADIATION IMPROVES SEVERE ALZHEIMER’S Low doses of radiation delivered to the brain provided remarkable improvements in patients with severe Alzheimer’s disease, according to a study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease. Four patients were given three treatments of low-dose radiation each spaced two weeks apart via CT scanner.
Number of people age 65 and older who have
Alzheimer’s disease.
Three of the four patients showed improvements within one day in terms of increased alertness and responsiveness, recognition of loved ones, mobility, social engagement, mood, and more. Many neurological diseases are caused by oxidative stress that damages cells, and researchers say low doses of radiation can help the body repair itself. Two days after treatment the son of one patient reported that his mom had been helped by the technique. “She looked at me and said, ‘Hello, dear.’ She hadn’t said this to me in years.”
DRUG COMBO MAY CURE COVID-19 An international team of researchers developed an experimental system to screen drugs for their eff ectiveness against the SARS-CoV-2 virus. To do this, they manipulated cells to be infected with and produce the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Then, the scientists screened drugs already approved for clinical use against COVID-19 infection, including remdesivir and chloroquine, to test their model. After screening a wide variety of medications, they discovered that two drugs taken together — cepharanthine, which is used to treat inflammation, and nelfinavir, which treats HIV infection — eff ectively suppressed the virus. the virus from entering cells by preventing it from binding to a protein on the cell membrane, and nelfinavir inhibits a protein that is necessary for the virus to replicate. Computer models show the combo could clear the virus in fewer than five days. More research is needed before this medication duo could be used to fight COVID-19 in humans.
UNLABELED TOXIC CHEMICALS FOUND IN MAKEUP A high percentage of makeup contains a group of potentially harmful chemicals called per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), according to a study published in Environmental Science & Technology Letters. PFAS have been linked to a wide range of health problems ranging from
cancer and obesity, to more severe COVID-19 outcomes. Researchers screened 231 cosmetic products and found high fluorine levels — which indicate the probable presence of PFAS — in most waterproof mascara, liquid lipsticks, and foundations. Some products with the highest fluorine levels were tested further, and all were found
to have at least four PFAS, but most products had none listed on the label. “Lipstick wearers may inadvertently eat several pounds of lipstick in their lifetimes,” said Graham Peaslee, the study’s senior author. “As a result, millions of people are unknowingly wearing PFAS and other harmful chemicals on their faces and
bodies daily.”
