ourists who buy counterfeit merchandise from shady street vendors in New York and other cities are unwittingly supporting international ter- rorism and drug trafficking, law enforcement offi-
cials say. Illicit sidewalk goods like copies of Gucci, Prada, and
Louis Vuitton handbags, Rolex watches, and other luxury brands go for a fraction of what the real thing would cost in legitimate stores. Other items peddled for a few dollars include DVD copies
of the latest Hollywood movies and CDs of top-selling pop and rap artists — obtained via illegal downloading. The result is the fueling of a powerful, multibillion-dollar
business that experts say funds human misery on a global scale.
“They are a well-organized, disciplined syndicate of coun-
terfeit merchandise sellers who use the proceeds to finance heroin dealing and promote international terrorism,” said Paul DiGiacomo, president of New York City’s Detectives’ Endowment Association. He says the ill-gotten proceeds are typically either fun-
neled through shell companies to overseas bank accounts or stuffed into metal drums with fake documentation and sent out of the country on cargo ships. “To know that this money winds up funding terrorist bombings, kidnappings, and other nefarious activities the world over is heartbreaking,” DiGiacomo says. “And real companies are losing revenues, costing working people jobs,
