The Crusade Continues

Billy Graham Library serves as a ministry dedicated to presenting the Gospel.

nyone visiting Charlotte, North Carolina, owes it to themselves

to merge onto the Billy Graham Parkway and take the 10-minute drive from the airport to visit the Billy Graham Library, where admission is free. Standing behind Gra-

ham’s childhood home, which has been beautiful- ly restored and preserved, the library is dedicated to the life and legacy of “America’s Pastor.” Visitors enter at the

foot of the cross — a 40-foot-tall glass window in the building’s façade.

The 40,000-square-foot library is built in the form of a country barn, complete with a silo and an animatronic cow in the foyer — all references to Graham’s pastoral up- bringing on a dairy farm. The “library” is

actually a living history museum cataloging God’s call on the elder Graham’s life. Viewing its august displays feels a bit like tak- ing a tour of the elaborate Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C. Stroll through a repro- duction of the living room of the Graham’s Mon- treat, North Carolina, log

home, complete with a breathtaking mountain view. See the white wedding

gown that wife Ruth Gra- ham made herself. Experience a replica of

the “Greater Los Angeles Revival,” promoted by newspaper czar William Randolph Hearst, that helped launch Graham’s global evangelism cru- sades. View a series of antique TV sets playing vintage Billy Graham altar calls. Watch a hilarious video clip of him match- ing wits with comedian Woody Allen.

Visit the library’s gift

and bookstore, “Ruth’s Attic,” complete with an extensive collection of Bibles and special edi- tions. Graham initially resist- ed the idea of establish- ing a library in his name. Only when its evangelism potential was pointed out did he agree. “When it was present- ed as an ongoing ministry and that people would have the opportunity to be won to Christ, I changed my mind,” he said. One measure of Gra-

ham’s stature: When the library was dedicated in May 2007, former presi- dents Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, and George H. W. Bush all attended the opening ceremony. Well over 1.7 million visitors
