Megan hustles her four kids, two cats, and a Si-
berian husky into the basement. As the winds begin shaking her home, she
gathers her family in a circle. They hold hands in the basement and pray “for God to keep his hand on our families, and our town.” The tornado begins to roar. “Do you hear that, Mom?” one of her daugh-
ters asks, her eyes wide with fear. Megan tells her to stay calm so she doesn’t frighten the twins. Then Megan looks up: Her floorboards are
rattling so hard that dust is swirling into the air. A basement window breaks, and Megan
throws herself over the twins to protect them from flying glass. The husky, meanwhile, stands guard over her oldest daughter. Eventually, the howling wind subsides. She
tells her children to stay in the safety of the base- ment as she surveys the house upstairs. And try though she might, she will never forget what she witnessed next. “I walk through my kitchen and dining room,
through the living room and out the front door,” she recalls. “Everything seems fine. “I’m about to tell my kids, ‘I think we’re good,
I don’t think it hit our house.’ But something tells me, ‘Megan, go back upstairs.’” She walks down the hall to her bedroom, and
opens the door. “I don’t see my ceiling,” she says. “I only see
the sky.” Her home has been destroyed. Continued on page 61
