creativity, instead of rushing out to frantically buy the latest hot item. Most of us will agree: the best gifts are the ones that come from the heart and are uniquely handmade. I’ve found a new creative passion—I recently completed a felt-making class with Rachel Nicholson. See her bio on page 8. Our theme this month is Mental Wellness. And, I think we all need some mental relief after this grueling election year! In Stay Sharp, Lisa Marshall discusses how dietary changes and certain supplements may have a positive impact on brain function (p. 16). We also cover the use of conventional antidepressants versus natural lifestyle choices for the treatment of depression (p.24). Finally, adopt an Attitude of Gratitude for everything in life.
As Thanksgiving approaches, we are led to consider just what makes us grateful. The basic necessities of food and shelter and someone(s) to love are givens for most of us. So for us the question goes deeper. We are thankful for the freedoms our country assures, especially this month to choose our own leaders and worship as we please. Also, for the opportunities for education, the right to choose whom we love, the chance to work and maintain our independence. For many who are struggling today in low paying—or loss of—jobs, gratitude may not be so easy. Be mindful of those who need extra help. Donate to your local food bank. Every little bit (whether purchased items or your time as a volunteer) helps. As my Chamomile teabag quote reads this evening: “Let us be kind and compassionate to remove the sadness of the world.” (Thank you teabag maker for letting me share this wonderful reminder!)

Natural Awakenings practices environmental sustainability by using postconsumer recycled paper and soy-based ink on uncoated stock. This choice avoids the toxic chemicals and high energy costs of producing shiny, coated paper that is hard to recycle.
