roundup OPERA SCENES

David Seligman, Cardiff lawyer and former Welsh National Opera director, passed away in August, but his legacy remains in, among other things, the Royal Welsh College’s David Seligman Opera School. For two evenings this month, students at the School will perform scenes from the various top shelf opera you doubtless know and love.

Royal Welsh College Of Music & Drama, Cardiff, Sat 6 + Sun 7 Nov. Tickets: £10/£8. Info: rwcmd.ac.uk

JOKER: LIVE IN CONCERT

When Todd Phillips’ movie Joker came out in 2019, with Joaquin Phoenix as the clownfaced protagonist, many worried that its amoral scenes would lead to copycat incidents from disaffected youths. That didn’t happen. But this concert, which features a live orchestra performing Hildur Guðnadóttir’s suitably dark score as the film plays on a big screen behind them, might just have audience members grabbing their ‘air bow’ and acting out the lead cello parts…

Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff Bay, Tue 9 Nov. Tickets: from £36. Info: wmc.org.uk

THIS ISLAND’S MINE

Roustabout, a Bristolian young person’s theatre company, are taking their latest play This Island’s Mine on tour across the UK, including a date in Blackwood (with two performances, at 11am and 2pm). It’s a riff on The Tempest which keeps Shakespeare’s island-bound setting and runs with one of the themes that some scholars attribute to the Bard’s vision – colonialism – but updated for our modern society.

Miners Institute, Blackwood, Sat 6 Nov. Tickets: £8. Info: blackwoodminersinstitute.com
