Two editions of FOCUS Wales in seven months could be seen as spoiling us, the music-enjoying public. In a more practical sense, this May slot is a case of the innovative Wrexham town-centre weekender reverting to its preferred time of the year – in 2021, they had to sit it out until October to ensure (or even be vaguely confident) it could go ahead. But they passed with flying colours, and it’s back already.


Held across 15 venues in the north Wales town’s centre, including ones repurposed just for these shows, this event fair deluges Wrexham in quality music. They’re saying over 300 acts are lined up to play in 2022, and if we could count that high we’d test them, but FOCUS Wales have established themselves as a name you can trust. From the top table, then, there’ll be appearances by Liverpool’s enduring big music practitioners Echo & The Bunnymen, empowering breakout star of 2021 Self Esteem, Cymraeg-Kernowek synth cosmicist Gwenno [pictured], arch archive footage utilisers Public Service Broadcasting and US indie faves The Besnard Lakes.


The weekend is though very much about finding some slice of hitherto unheard magic, and if you’re minded to take our advice (unlikely) please do search out Alice Low, Deep Tan, Grove, Private World and Ailsa Tully, who Buzz’s Emma Way spoke to recently – find that interview on our website. “Wales is really good for that though,” Tully says, on support for new music; “I think people can have a lot of time for you. People love music there, and they’re really supportive of smaller artists.”
