Elden Ring 73
Games Of 2022 Editor’s Choices
EVERDELL – COMPLETE COLLECTION Starling Games
Four years from its original release, this all-encompassing expansion of James Wilson’s woodland critter management game was Kickstarter-funded to the tune of £3.3 million in Octo- ber, and deserves clearing a spot on your board game Kallax for. Gorgeously designed, thoroughly addictive and worth losing friends and family when you screw them over.
STRAY
PlayStation, Windows In Stray, you play as a wandering ginger cat in a virus-ravaged fu- ture dystopia, with only a helpful robot for company. If it sounds bleak, it kind of is, but this is less Resident Evil and more Blade Runner in look and feel, with a little Wall-E thrown in for good measure; while clever and intui- tive mechanics immerse you fully into your new feline persona.
ELDEN RING PlayStation, Xbox, Windows The game that made a virtual folk hero of half-naked, pot-headed warrior LetMeSoloHer (player name Klein Tsuboi), Elden Ring is also infamous for being damn- near impossible to beat. For those who like the gruelling ‘actual work’ of games like Dark Souls and Death Stranding, this dark Middle Ages fantasy is heaven; for the rest of us, pure – if im- pressive – hell.
POKEMON LEGENDS: ARCEUS
Nintendo Switch Scarlet and Violet may be glitchy messes but luckily, the Pokémon Company can fall back on earlier release this year, Arceus. Am- bitiously named after the Poké God and set before Diamond and Pearl, the open-world format was a risky first for the franchise but still familiar enough to excel, in a series constantly reinventing itself.
BAYONETTA 3 Nintendo Switch
Despite pay controversies surrounding its lead English-lan- guage voice actor, it’s hard to not put Bayonetta 3 in the upper echelons of the year’s best games. A favourite of Lady Gaga – a woman of culture, clearly – this latest instalment spent nearly a decade in development and clear- ly, every minute paid off: playing as this gun-toting librarian is as ludicrously fun as ever.
