TV & Streaming of 2022 Editor’s Choices
THE BEAR Disney+
Frenetic editing, a sublime soundtrack, powerful perfor- mances and a fluid, lively script makes this kitchen drama-com- edy from Christopher Storey as fulfilling as any artisanal sandwich, with added depth of flavour from mature themes that hit right in the gut. TV doesn’t get better-crafted than this.
HEARTSTOPPER Netflix Based on Alice Oseman’s popular graphics novels and co-directed by Welshman Euros Lynn, this live-action adaptation is a stand- out in coming-of-age and coming out media for a generation that is more open, inclusive and honest about their identities than any previously. Look out for cast member Yasmin Finney starring alongside Ncuti Gatwa in Russell T. Davies’ soft Doctor Who reboot in the summer of 2023.
WELCOME TO WREXHAM Disney+
Up the town! A docuseries about a football club that, much like Wrexham FC itself, is really about a lot more than that: Wel- come To Wrexham was perhaps 2022’s most surprising comfort hit, like tuning into a warm mug of Welsh tea each week, peppered with frank discussions about masculinity, fatherhood, social mobility, and the power of sport and community.

This Is Going To Hurt 63
THIS IS GOING TO HURT BBC
COVID put our poor NHS under the microscope more than ever, as did this Ben Whishaw-starring se- ries this year. Created from Adam Kay’s personal experiences on a public ward, this no-holds-barred black comedy drama is stitched together with bitter truths and unflinching realism, held together by a frazzled Whishaw.
SEVERANCE Apple TV
Not recommended for anyone going through a tough mental health period, Severance comes at a time when big and bold sci-fi is thriving in TV land. A low-key dramatic turn from comic actor Adam Scott in a pitch-perfect fantasy satire of our shrinking work/life balance, not to mention a directorial revelation from Ben Stiller.
