27 beauty companies join Cosmetics


Europe’s landmark eco initiative EUROPE A list of 27 beauty players have joined as pioneer companies for Cosmetics Europe’s sustainability initiative Commit for Our Planet. Described by the European personal care association as an ‘unprecedented’ industry- wide push, Commit for Our Planet aims to reduce the sector’s environmental footprint in Europe. The initiative encourages all cosmetics and personal


care companies to take part in a joint industry effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve


packaging solutions and act for nature.


The initiative’s 27 partner companies are AVA Cosmetic Laboratory, Babaria, Beiersdorf, Börlind, Bruno Vassari, Colgate-Palmolive, Cosnova, Coty, Dalli Group, Floslek, Gardiner Family Apothecary (Elave), Global Cosmed, Henkel, Keune,


Natura & Co mulls minority stake sale of Aesop


BRAZIL Natura & Co is reportedly considering selling a minority stake of beauty brand Aesop. CVC Capital Partners, as well as beauty competitors L’Occitane and Shiseido, are rumoured to have expressed an interest in the deal, Bloomberg reported.


The Brazilian brand owner was initially exploring an initial public offering (IPO) for Aesop, but the current volatility of the market caused the company to reassess its focus.


Natura & Co is said to be in the initial stages outlining the potential deal, but no decision has been made yet. It comes after the


business revealed plans to reorganise its business in 2022 and transition to a ‘simpler’ holding company structure.


The cosmetics company said the restructure aims to increase the ‘accountability’ of its Natura, Avon, The Body Shop and Aesop brands. Aesop sales have also remained buoyant.

Serena Williams targets wellness with Will Perform launch


US Tennis icon Serena Williams is launching a wellness brand focused on recovery. Called Will Perform, the label features topical products including Will Relieve, Will Cool, Will Rest and Will Soothe to impart


pain relief and provide muscle support.


The line-up is intended to elevate the current recovery category’s usage occasions and bridge the gap between performance and self care in everyday life. Williams co-founded the brand with CPG executive Hank Mercier (Will Perform’s CEO) and Eric Ryan, the serial entrepreneur behind Method, nutraceuticals brand Olly and first aid brand Welly.


LUSH LANDS £217M INVESTMENT TO ‘INVIGORATE’ THE BRAND


UK Lush has a major new investor who plans to ‘invigorate’ and ‘strengthen’ the cosmetics brand during the challenging economic climate. Silverwood Brands has snapped up a 19.8% stake in the UK high street retailer, acquiring around £217m in shares. The investment company will engage Lush’s management team, stakeholders and other shareholders to explore ways they can maximise value for all parties. “Silverwood’s directors have an extensive


professional network and significant experience in the consumer brands space,” the company said. “[This] should prove useful in generating new ideas to invigorate and strengthen the Lush brand.” Silverwood also owns nail brand Nailberry and a 90% share capital in Japan’s Sonotas Holdings.

Puig has unveiled a digital platform called WikiParfum. The Barcelona-based beauty and fashion house described WikiParfum as a “vast online compendium” of expert content, functionality and features, developed by industry professionals. The platform has been developed to enable users to browse, compare and choose fragrances from a regularly updated library, which currently includes around 19,600 scents.


PZ CUSSONS British accessories designer Anya Hindmarch has launched a crossbody handbag and charm based on Imperial Leather’s classic bar soap. The PZ Cussons-owned brand’s Original Bar Soap is one of several instantly-recognisable products that have been immortalised in handbag form by the accessories brand, alongside those from Heinz, Kellogg’s and Coca-Cola.


LILIAL Cosmetic products containing the fragrance ingredient lilial have now been banned from UK shelves. 15 December 2022 marked the ‘making available on the market’ deadline for goods containing lilial, also known as butylphenyl methylpropional (BMHCA). This means that such products must be taken off shelves in the Great British market. The BMHCA ban has been in force in the EU and Northern Ireland since 1 March 2022.

Hair care brand Cantu Beauty has appointed songwriter and actress Jordin Sparks as its new brand ambassador. Sparks will engage with the brand’s community initiatives for young women and support its work with global nonprofit Women Empowering Nations.
