CHEBULA: AN AYURVEDIC HISTORY
Terminalia chebula is a species of Terminalia that is native to south Asia, including India, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan and Thailand, as well as some provinces in China. The trees yield smallish, ribbed, nut-like fruits
that are used as a main ingredient in the Ayurvedic formulation triphala, used to treat kidney and liver dysfunctions. The dried fruit is also used in Ayurveda as a purported antitussive, cardiotonic, homeostatic, diuretic and laxative. It is further used as a soothing agent for dry cough.
And chebula has been proven to be an extremely potent antioxidant, delivering an ORAC score higher than açai.
This is because it is considered a cascading antioxidant. Most antioxidants lose effectiveness within an hour of application once they’ve absorbed all the free radicals they can hold. Chebula absorbs a free radical and then takes on a new form to be able to continue absorbing free radicals over a much longer period of time. This is why we chose to use this amazing ingredient in a few of our products to leverage this powerful ingredient in our Chebula Active Serum, our Chebula Extreme Cream and our Skin Barrier Sun Shield SPF 30
