ECO REPORT COLD PROCESSING

COMFORT W

COLD

While not a new trend, cold processing saves energy, money and time, but what cosmetic ingredients can be used in this eco-friendly way?

hen it comes to environmental responsibility and beauty brands, rethinking packaging tends to be at the top of the list.

On the formulation side, thought tends to be given to ingredient genesis: is something organic, is it sustainably and ethically sourced, upcycled or biotech-derived?

And at end-of-life: is it biodegradable? But what about during manufacture? Increasingly, new ingredient press releases received by Cosmetics Business not only list an impressive roster of green certifications from the likes of COSMOS and Natrue, many also boast of being cold processable.

PART OF THE PROCESS

“Cold processing is a very energy-saving manufacturing process in which neither the water nor the oil phase needs to be heated,” explains

Antje Düring, Formulation and Study Data Manager at cosmetic ingredients supplier Mibelle Biochemistry.

“This process not only saves heat energy, but also shortens the production time considerably. “In this way, the manufacturing costs can also be reduced.”

An additional benefit, Düring notes, is that cold processing permits more gentle handling of the ingredient itself, as it is not heated. Nadine Le Bris, Market Development Hair/Body/Oral at multinational chemical company BASF, explains that cold processing is experiencing an uptick in line with growing brand appetite overall for greener processes. “With the current market focus on eco-friendly materials and processes, cold process has gained popularity, reducing the energy costs, manufacturing time required and equipment costs,” she says.
