HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHANNEL 4, AND HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US It’s now 40 years since Televisual’s first issue went to press. The magazine, previously known as ‘Corporate Video’, in the dim and distant 70s, was renamed and relaunched as Televisual back in 1982 in response to the birth of Channel 4 and the burgeoning independent TV production sector that the channel brought to life. That indie production sector in turn helped fuel independent post houses
adding to their work servicing the commercials and film sectors. Throughout Televisual’s history, we’ve also been tracking the fortunes
of that post and vfx sector and this issue we unveil our annual Facilities 50 survey, now in its 35th year. The survey finds a sector that is currently still full to bursting with work
boosted by the inward investment dollars of the streamers, particularly since the lockdown logjam was unblocked. But there are clouds on the horizon. Like much of the UK production world now, there is the small problem of finding enough available talent to cope with the workload while racing to train enough new entrants to keep up. There’s also a recession on the horizon, rising energy costs and budgets being squeezed. Much of the increase in work coming through to the UK’s post and vfx
and sector has been driven by high end drama from the streamers and domestic broadcasters upping their scripted game to keep up. In our drama genre report we find a sector where the opportunities are still huge for ambitious work, but where there are worries that the bubble may be on the verge of bursting. Finding enough talent is also a concern here, and we take a separate look at the efforts being made to move scripted talent to the next level and engage with new entrants from a wider and more diverse pool of potential. Keeping with scripted talent, there is also a focus this issue on the
essential craft skills of both cinematography and production design. We ask a selection of top DoPs about the secrets of their craft. We also take a look at production design and find a job transformed by digital tools and the advance of vfx and one that is gearing up for another big change with the growth of virtual production workflows. But it’s not just scripted TV facing change. As the streamers have joined
the factual TV party, and as traditional broadcasters take an increasingly ‘digital first’ approach to commissioning, we take a look at how much factual TV is shifting in shape to adapt to an increasingly non-linear age.
