Wellingborough School
Students celebrate
A level success
In a year with unprecedented challenges for Upper Sixth students, Wellingborough School is celebrating the achievements and resilience of our students as they receive their A level grades. Te pass rate today stands at 99% with over 70% A*-B grades. With around a third of the assessed grades from teachers, who know their pupils well, adjusted downwards by examination boards based on statistical models rather than individual performance, not every achievement has been fully recognised and we anticipate that some higher grades will be rein- stated on appeal. We are, however, delighted that most of our Upper Sixth have been able to move successfully onto the university or other destination of their choice. Almost 20% of the Upper Sixth gained a clean sweep of A*/A grades,
two of whom will go on to take up places at the University of Oxford. Our students now look forward to a range of courses and appren- ticeships including Economics, Engineering, Geography, Law, Politics, Mathematics and Medicine, at destinations across the country from Edinburgh to Southampton. Headmaster Andrew Holman praised the achievements of the
students, stating “Our Upper Sixth deserve our heartiest congrat-
ulation having worked extremely hard for two years, and then having to endure a summer in which they might feel that the outcomes were no longer in their own hands. Despite the farce that has descended upon them and upon schools, in the form of an ill- thought-through, frequently-changing standardi- sation and appeals process, the vast majority are now in a position to pursue their passion. We will, nonetheless, be taking every measure available to us to redress the injustices that have been meted out to some students and to ensure that our Leavers are awarded the grades they deserve. Tis is also the ideal moment to thank our teachers, without whose expertise and dedication our Sixth Formers would not be in such a strong position.”
