FOCUS Floods and water supplies

Case studies – Calder Textiles and Sainsbury’s In commercial buildings, there is a preference

for aluminium barriers, because they provide a robust serviceable material and are designed to ensure the long life span of the product. They are also easy to sterilise after use and can be powder coated in any RAL colour to blend in with the aesthetics of the company brand. The barrier prevents water from entering the

property with a gasket seal on the bottom, and vertical and horizontal pressure in the upright channels. The benefit of the Buffalo barrier is that no threshold is required and no U-channel has to be cut out of the ground, which means there is no trip hazard. When installing flood barriers, it is recommended that you seek the advice of a structural engineer if protection is required over 600mm, due to the impact of water pressure on the foundations of the building.

Sainsbury’s Calder Textiles

TEXTILE MANUFACTURER Calder Textiles, which provides carpets for leisure, hospitality and entertainment venues, required a cost effective solution that delivered business continuity and protected valuable stock after its premises was flooded on Boxing Day in 2015.

Barrier systems were needed for its loading

bays and openings in order to secure the premises, but as the site is more than 100 years old it required additional groundwork to ensure that the barriers had a flush surface to seal against. The solution for the business included

a Buffalo HD barrier system, which uses aluminium logs that can be manually positioned across the opening of the loading bay prior to a flood, requiring a set up of under ten minutes per opening. These flood barriers are a flexible, robust

product, as they can be manufactured to any length and come in a range of heights from 200mm to 1600mm. The benefit of aluminium Buffalo flood barriers is that they provide a long lasting, cost effective product which can be adapted to customer needs, with the use of demountable posts to extend the barrier wall to fit any loading bay or create a longer wall. They can also be used to create demountable bunds around assets, with the use of 90o

During the devastating floods in Carlisle in 2015, the local Sainsbury’s store was flooded to a water depth of 1m high, which cost the business in excess of £10 million in loss of stock, trade and plant. The insurance company involved required flood protection products to be installed to mitigate the loss in the event of a future flood. Sainsbury’s required a unique, innovate solution that protected the store against floods of 1.2m high, but could also be installed with minimum disruption to the store. The system
