Peter Barker The golden thread (p36)


Peter is fire safety manager and team leader in the engineering and technical evaluation/assurance team at International Fire Consultants Ltd,


part of the IFC Group. As an independent expert in the UK and internationally, he has worked in passive fi re protection, previously with a prominent UKAS accredited fi re testing laboratory, leading a team of engineers producing engineering assessments.


Jon Cole Partners against crime (p28)


Jon is chief operating officer of Secured by Design. He joined the police service in 1982 and worked as


an architectural liaison offi cer from 1990. In 1999, he joined SBD as its fi rst member of staff. He has received two President’s Commendations from the Association of Chief Police Offi cers for his work in crime prevention.


Dennis Davis Imperfect discipline (p20)


Dennis is director of Independent Fire Advisers Ltd. His extensive background in fi re and civil protection includes


roles as Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Fire Services for Scotland, chief fi re offi cer for Cheshire, president of IFE and CFOA, and a senior role with the FPA. He currently contributes to the FSF on research, competency and international liaison and supports CTIF, the international FRS association, as an EU special adviser.


Bob Glendenning Designing competency (p16)


Bob is the global fi re engineering manager for Sherwin-Williams. After over 20 years in the steelwork industry,


Bob made the switch into the design of fi re protection. As lead engineer of a growing team, Bob manages fi re engineering recruitment, designing unique engineering software to support and underpin this.


Mike Jay Be prepared (p50)


Mike is convenor of the RISCAuthority security group. He previously managed the FPA’s risk management services


(RMS), which he helped set up in 2002. RMS supplies independent property, casualty survey and risk improvement services to a range of insurers, including the largest global players, and in summer 2008, it completed its 10,000th assignment.

Dr Nikola Stoyanov Tried and tested (p32)


Nikola studied Civil Engineering at the University of Manchester and currently is working on a PhD. His research


focuses on investigating the residual strength for hydrocarbon fi re resistance of low carbon steels when exposed to cryogenic temperatures due to accidental contact with liquefi ed natural gas (LNG). The research project is sponsored by Exova, where he is also working on a part time basis performing assessments for structural steel protection and R&D.


Keith Strugnell Extra benefi ts (p42)


Keith Strugnell started at SSAIB in 2004 as an auditor covering security systems. He progressed further by


adding the scope of auditing fi re detection and alarm systems, before becoming scheme manager for fi re systems. Boasting over 36 years’ experience in the fi re and security industry, Keith is responsible for the BAFE SP203-1, BAFE SP101/ST104 and BAFE SP205 schemes. He also represents SSAIB at various British Standards Institute technical committees and BAFE committees.


Mark Taylor Avoiding risks (p24)


Mark Taylor is senior technical support engineer at Advanced. He has more than 30 years of


experience, which covers all aspects of fire and security system installation, maintenance, servicing, commissioning and BMS integration.


Jifeng Yuan Tried and tested (p32)


A materials scientist with a PhD in Civil Engineering, Jifeng specialises in structural fi re protection. He started


his career in fi re safety engineering consultancy, then moved on to fi re testing and product assessments. He is involved in fi re safety industry associations, and standardisation committees at national, European and international levels.
