ATTLING IN a competitive market that is constantly evolving, providers of important risk and facilities management services


need to know how they can best make their mark, demonstrate their credentials and expertise, and adhere to best practice – all while trying to win business in the areas of fi re, security and management systems. In addition, how are specifiers and end users ensuring that the highest levels of protection are being safeguarded for their staff, facilities, visiting customers and on site contractors? Furthermore, are their implemented measures meeting insurance requirements by being compliant with all legislation – both current and future – as well as with any imposed response criteria, for example, by the fi re and police services. With a plethora of online recommendations,


government backed initiatives and ventures such as Which? magazine, TrustMark, Checkatrade and Trustatrader, it’s surprising to think that the benefits of third party certification aren’t commonly recognised. In a purely practical sense, these advantages can put service providers ahead of their competitors and

reassure customers that they are working to the very highest of standards.


Risk management


Independent third party registration body British Approvals of Fire Equipment (BAFE) introduced its UKAS accredited SP205 certifi cation scheme for fi re risk management back in 2005 – after the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 came into force. Anyone required by law – and known as the ‘responsible person’ or ‘duty holder’ – to perform a fi re risk assessment of a premises is able to do so through BAFE’s SP205 certifi cation scheme. Specialist third party companies employed


to carry out this service are also included, which allows them to prove that the necessary steps have been taken for them to be able to comply with their legal obligations. A successful SP205 audit allows providers of fi re risk assessments to market their achievements to end users as a benchmark recognition of their skills and capabilities, and shows that they possess the required technical and quality management competency – as well as demonstrating that
