Third party certification

install, maintain and monitor security systems that require police response are, therefore, audited for compliance by a third party certification body – such as SSAIB – which is accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS). Level one police response (ie immediate) is simply not available without third party certification and the associated unique reference number (URN) assigned by the police. Failure to provide this level of protection will leave the facility widely exposed to a range of potential risks, including arson, theft, vandalism and attacks on staff. Arson on its own is enough to cause a

company to cease trading as, even if the initial impact of the incident is successfully navigated, the interruption, damage to the reputation of the business and insurance related costs can all have a massively significant impact. The aforementioned Security Systems

scheme is dependent on British Standards being achieved as well. This means, for instance, that ARC or RVRC monitored systems must conform to BS EN 50518, a revised version of which was introduced last year. Most importantly, all relevant standards are incorporated within the certification auditing process, whether the audit is held to cover an intruder alarm system or any other type of equipment.

Management systems

The auditing process doesn’t just benefit the areas of fire risk assessments and security – as certification schemes for management systems can be held alongside product

certification, or run independently of it. Quality management systems (QMS) certification to the latest ISO 9001: 2015 standard addresses business framework – management processes, continual improvement, identifying risks to the business and customer satisfaction – instead of accentuating routines and procedures. Meanwhile, the requirements for an

environmental management system are covered by the international standard, ISO 14001. This certification allows an organisation to develop and implement a policy and objectives covering legal and other requirements that it subscribes to as part of its environmental management policy. In a similar vein, OHSAS 18001 compliance evidences that an organisation has measured all health and safety management aspects within the workplace, which incorporates the health and safety of employees, visitors and contractors, in addition to the introduction of robust procedures to ensure continual improvement and review.

Licensing and approvals

However, the list of benefits of certification and becoming an SSAIB registered company are still not exhausted at this point – as UKAS accredited certification bodies are active in a multitude of other associated areas as well. Security manned services, which include keyholding and response, door supervisors, static site guarding, mobile patrol services, event stewarding and crowd safety, are just another example of this.
