ASFP appoints new team members
THE ASSOCIATION for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP) has appointed Phil Brownhill as head of training and Andrew Taylor as technical offi cer. These appointments aim to help the ASFP ‘take forward a number of key initiatives planned for 2018’, with Mr Brownhill’s role as head of training aiming to ‘establish the ASFP’s extensive new training programme’ scheduled for launch in March. Mr Taylor’s role as technical offi cer meanwhile will ‘continue the association’s vital role in developing industry guidance and promoting best practice’. Mr Brownhill stated: ‘I am delighted to
have joined the ASFP team at this pivotal time. The Association’s new training initiative will signifi cantly raise the bar and improve understanding of passive fi re protection for all involved in the built environment, as well as improving the quality of installed systems. ‘Unlike currently available courses, this
new training programme is recognised by the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) and will allow trainees to demonstrate competency while also offering a route for progression and academic recognition in
this key
fi re protection specialism. Candidates will work to obtain an IFE Level 2 or Level 3 Certifi cate in passive fi re protection, with Level 3 candidates eligible to apply for IFE membership at Technician Grade (TIFireE). IFE qualifi cations are recognised by the
Offi ce of Qualifi cations and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual) which means they have real academic value as well as defi ned equivalence with overseas qualifi cations.’ Mr Taylor commented: ‘I very much look
forward to working with ASFP members through our Technical Task Groups and with other industry stakeholders to ensure the Association can continue to infl uence policy, respond to changing standards and create essential technical guidance. ‘I am eager to assist the Association’s with
work the Royal Institute of British
Architects (RIBA) in developing a Plan of Works for Fire Protection, which aims to ensure there is a detailed specifi cation for fi re protection at the design stage and a schedule for fi re throughout the construction process. I believe this work will be key to ensuring the safety of our future built environment. ‘The ASFP is recognised as the leading authority in passive fi re protection, well known for its technical expertise and its extensive range of industry guidance both for the specifi er and installer. With Building Regulations and fi re safety legislation under review following the Grenfell tragedy, ASFP’s expertise will once again be vital in establishing appropriate technical guidance and offering support to stakeholders throughout the sector.’
OSS expands fire door manufacturing OPENVIEW SECURITY Solutions (OSS) has expanded
its manufacturing facilities
for security and fi re doors ‘as a result of experiencing a signifi cant upturn in orders’. Its doors are ‘used extensively in
tower blocks and other shared housing environments’, and are being fi tted across the UK by housing providers ‘as part of extensive refurbishment programmes currently being undertaken’ to ‘deliver a higher level of protection for residents’.
Martin Gooch, general manager of
OpenView’s timber services department, stated: ‘We are seeing exceptional demand for our premium quality security and fi re doors which are cost effective, easy to install and comply with all regulatory requirements. The ability to manufacture these products in-house allows us to ensure that they are fi t for purpose and meet the specifi c requirements of local authorities and social housing providers.’
THE JLC Group has developed blast enhanced sliding door systems that are 30% larger than ‘other comparable systems’ for higher traffi c levels. The doors provide ‘at least the same’ level of protection as smaller systems, and have been fully tested for ‘optimum safety’ as terrorist threats and activities become ‘ever present’. They are resistant to intentional and accidental blasts, and comply
with standards for
safety and blast resistance. For more information, visit www. jlcautomationservices.
