GRAND DAYS OUT
“there are a number of shops, boutiques, activities,
cafes and restaurants to explore and enjoy
” continued from page 49 Along with nature walks, Woodbridge
boasts a millennium’s worth of visible history waiting to be explored. The Tide Mill is one of the earliest
examples of its kind and the oldest working Tide Mill in the UK - operating for well over 800 years. It has a host of interactive activities, unique computer-generated imagery and children’s events and you can even see the huge oak water wheel turning. Standing at the head of the marina it uses the power of the tide to grind the grain and produce the delicious stone-ground wholemeal flour which is used by many local producers and the town’s award- winning bakery. The spectacular ship burial at Sutton Hoo -
with its tale of kingship, mystery and buried treasure - is also guaranteed to appeal and links the town to the epic poem Beowulf, prompting a festival in the town earlier this year. Arguably one of the greatest archaeological
discoveries of all time, the Sutton Hoo museum, on site, offers opportunity to learn about the ship burial and the treasured possessions that were found inside. Children will especially enjoy the extra activities like dressing up and making their very own Anglo-Saxon helmet.
